U.S. autonomous driving company Aurora recently announced that its self-driving truck successfully completed a continuous freight run covering approximately 1,609 kilometers (1,000 miles) from Fort Worth to Phoenix in about 15 hours—significantly surpassing the U.S. federal regulations governing human drivers. Under current rules, human drivers are limited to a maximum of 11 hours of driving per day and must take mandatory rest breaks, making it nearly impossible to complete this route nonstop. Aurora currently operates on multiple routes across the Sun Belt region of the United States with a fleet of 30 trucks, 10 of which are already fully driverless. The company plans to expand its driverless fleet to over 200 vehicles by year-end. Since commencing commercial operations, Aurora has rolled out four software updates and accumulated more than 402,000 kilometers (250,000 miles) of autonomous driving—all without a single accident. In the second quarter of this year, Aurora will launch the International Motors LT autonomous truck, which will operate without a safety driver.
