When your Ford key fob runs out of battery, don’t rush to call a tow truck! Ceith Griffith, a DIY enthusiast from Kentucky, recently shared a handy tip on social media: many Ford vehicles feature a hidden “backup start zone.” Simply place the dead key fob in the designated spot, and you can start your car as usual. The exact location varies by model—older Taurus and Expedition models have it at the rear of the center console armrest; some 2018-and-newer Explorers and the 2025 Ranger hide it beneath the front cup holders; while 2024-and-newer models like the Bronco and Maverick place it in a small compartment under the dashboard. To use it, remove the plastic cover, position the key fob as indicated, press the brake pedal, and hit the start button. Even with a dead battery, the key’s internal RFID chip can still be detected by the vehicle’s sensor, enabling a no-battery start. Ford owners are advised to consult their owner’s manual for the precise location in their specific model and keep spare CR2450 batteries on hand for replacements.
