A 12-month real-world road test conducted across Canada, covering over 200,000 kilometers, found that each Class 8 electric semi-truck could save a fleet approximately CAD 157,000 (about RMB 791,000) over six years. The study was jointly carried out by the PIT Group, part of FPInnovations, and Transport Canada, comparing the real-world performance of Freightliner’s diesel-powered and battery-electric Cascadia trucks. Results showed that despite higher upfront purchase prices, elevated maintenance costs, and lower residual values, electric trucks still offer significant economic advantages when supported by government incentives. The study emphasized that the key to efficient operation of electric heavy-duty trucks lies in aligning them with fixed routes, centralized depots, and controllable return trips—rather than simply replacing diesel trucks on a one-to-one basis. Fleets such as Martin Brower, a McDonald’s supplier, achieved optimal results by adapting their operational models accordingly.
