Tesla’s Cybercab autonomous taxi has just rolled off the production line at its Texas factory, yet Victor Nechita, the project lead, abruptly announced his departure. Nechita, who started as an intern in 2017, endured the Model 3 "production hell," and steadily rose through the ranks to become a key executive, is the latest in a string of loyal insiders to leave. Over the past year, leaders of major vehicle programs—including the Cybertruck and Model Y—have successively exited, along with senior executives from powertrain, hardware engineering, and robotics divisions. Analysts attribute this exodus to Elon Musk’s high-pressure management style, frequent project interventions, and a strategic pivot toward AI and Robotaxi initiatives, which have marginalized traditional automotive talent. Unstable compensation packages have further accelerated the brain drain. Although Musk dismissed the departures as part of “normal organizational metabolism,” the ongoing instability within Tesla’s core leadership team poses a significant underlying risk as the company pushes into the AI and autonomous driving era.
