Due to energy supply disruptions caused by global geopolitical conflicts, Myanmar has implemented an odd-even fuel rationing system for private vehicles starting March 7, 2026: vehicles with odd-numbered license plates may only operate on odd-numbered days, while those with even-numbered plates are restricted to even-numbered days. Electric vehicles, electric motorcycles, and essential public transport are exempt from these restrictions. The military junta stated the measure aims to prevent prolonged fuel shortages, noting that national reserves can last approximately 40 days and that additional oil tankers are en route. However, long queues have formed at gas stations across many regions, some of which have suspended fuel sales altogether, while black-market fuel prices have surged sharply. Citizens worry the driving restrictions will increase living costs and question the accuracy of the government’s reserve claims. The crisis has spilled over into the Thailand-Myanmar border region, where large numbers of Myanmar residents are crossing into Thailand to refuel, causing severe traffic congestion and prompting Thai authorities to review their fuel export policies. Although Myanmar has recently encouraged electric vehicle imports through zero-tariff measures, inadequate charging infrastructure and difficulties in vehicle maintenance continue to hinder widespread adoption.
