Xiaomi's Vela Safety kernel has recently passed the assessment by TÜV Rheinland Germany and obtained ISO 26262 ASIL-D functional safety certification. ISO 26262 is an internationally recognized functional safety standard widely adopted in the automotive industry, imposing stringent requirements across the entire product lifecycle—including development processes, safety architecture design, coding standards, testing and validation, and risk management. ASIL-D represents the highest safety integrity level under this standard, applicable to automotive functions directly related to life safety and serving as a critical prerequisite for automotive-grade operating system kernels. During the certification process, Xiaomi’s team completed multiple rounds of deliverable reviews, on-site audits, and final expert evaluations based on its functional safety management system, with all assessment criteria fully meeting the standard’s requirements. The Xiaomi Vela Safety kernel employs a fine-grained decoupled architecture, layered safety mechanisms, and high-reliability runtime assurance technologies, balancing safety, stability, and real-time performance to meet the demanding requirements of automotive electronic control units (ECUs) in high-safety, high-real-time scenarios such as powertrain and chassis control. Xiaomi Vela is Xiaomi’s self-developed lightweight, general-purpose operating system. Previously deployed in consumer electronics including smart home devices, smart speakers, and wearables, it features low resource consumption, low power usage, and high compatibility. Starting in 2024, the system began being adapted for various ECU controllers in Xiaomi vehicles. This ASIL-D certification marks a significant milestone, confirming that systems built upon the Xiaomi Vela Safety kernel now comply with ISO 26262 requirements and are capable of supporting the safety-critical control functions of Xiaomi’s automotive platforms.
