BMW Group has launched a pilot project involving humanoid robots at its Leipzig plant in Germany, marking the first time physical artificial intelligence has been integrated into its European automotive production system. In collaboration with Swiss firm Hexagon Robotics, the project deploys AEON humanoid robots for tasks such as high-voltage battery assembly. These robots feature a human-like body structure and high operational precision. Renault Group announced it will become one of the world’s first automakers to deploy humanoid robots at scale, planning to install 350 Calvin-40 robots within the next 18 months to reduce production labor hours and costs. Currently, the automotive manufacturing sector has emerged as a key area for the commercial deployment of humanoid robots, with numerous domestic and international automakers incorporating them into their production systems through various approaches. However, widespread adoption still faces challenges related to technological maturity and cost control, and has raised concerns among labor unions about potential impacts on employment.
