BMW has fully unveiled the new i3 and is now focusing on developing a high-performance M3 variant. Although the automaker has not officially announced it yet, test mule photos of the vehicle have surfaced online, reportedly showcasing early design cues of what could become the first all-electric M3 in history. According to the leaked images, the prototype is a four-door sedan with a more aggressive stance than the new i3. Its front end features a complete redesign: the grille area incorporates a diamond-patterned lower section, a large central air intake in the front bumper divided by body-colored elements, and unusually boxy auxiliary lighting units on both sides—a rare design element for BMW models. Additionally, a prominent black air intake sits atop the hood, continuing the M division’s sporty design language. However, the test car lacks visibly widened track widths and signature M aerodynamic mirror caps, among other typical M-specific cues. Technically, BMW has confirmed the vehicle will adopt a four-motor layout, with each wheel independently driven to enable precise torque vectoring and chassis control. The battery pack is specially developed for the M series, with an estimated capacity ranging between 100.0 and 108.7 kWh, supporting sustained high-performance output. Rumors suggest a peak power output exceeding 1,300 horsepower, though final specifications remain undisclosed. To enhance the driving experience, BMW is also developing synthetic soundscapes and simulated gearshift feedback. Production of this electric M3 is expected to begin in early 2027. Meanwhile, the traditional internal combustion engine-powered M3 will remain part of BMW’s lineup.
