Recently, a group of female passengers in Miami attempted to violate Waymo’s rule limiting rides to a maximum of four passengers by bringing along a fifth person in a Waymo autonomous taxi. The vehicle’s monitoring system detected the violation, prompting Waymo customer service representatives to contact the passengers via the car’s internal communication system and request that the extra passenger be removed—otherwise, the trip would be canceled. One of the passengers posted a video of the incident on TikTok, showing how the customer service agent, after confirming the fifth passenger had not yet exited the vehicle, clearly stated that the ride would be terminated if the violation continued. The video has since garnered nearly 5 million views. Waymo vehicles are equipped with multiple cameras and microphones to ensure vehicle cleanliness, assist in locating lost items, provide emergency support, improve services, and monitor compliance with in-vehicle rules. The company states it does not listen to passenger conversations or use facial recognition or biometric technologies to identify riders. However, when a potential policy violation is suspected, support teams may review video footage and, if necessary, suspend the trip. Waymo currently allows a maximum of four passengers per vehicle (three in certain areas), with all seats available for use except the driver’s seat, which is strictly off-limits to passengers. Previously, a Reddit user posted concerns about seeing someone occupying the driver’s seat in a Waymo vehicle; other users clarified that the individual was likely an authorized test driver. Should an ordinary passenger sit in the driver’s seat, the vehicle immediately pulls over and customer service intervenes.
