On the evening of April 13, Geely unveiled its new i-HEV Smart Hybrid technology in Hangzhou. The mass-produced engine achieves a peak thermal efficiency of 48.41% and integrates AI technologies to enhance vehicle intelligence. This technology combines the engine, electric motor, electronic control systems, software algorithms, and energy management into an integrated powertrain solution that balances low energy consumption with strong performance. For years, Toyota and Honda have dominated the HEV market thanks to their mature hybrid architectures, extensive technical expertise, and global footprint. Competition in this space has traditionally centered on mechanical system attributes such as fuel efficiency, reliability, and smoothness. Today, however, user demands have expanded to include driving dynamics, intelligent control, scenario-based adaptability, and cost-effectiveness—shifting the competitive focus from purely mechanical excellence toward comprehensive system-level capabilities. In addition to Geely, Chinese automakers such as GAC and Great Wall are also actively advancing their own HEV technologies. This trend reflects the Chinese automotive industry’s strategic shift—from following established paths to pursuing independent innovation in powertrain development. Leveraging diverse technological approaches, a robust supply chain, and intense domestic competition, Chinese automakers are steadily building capabilities in rapid iteration and system integration. As Chinese automakers accelerate their global expansion, they are set to compete head-to-head with Japanese brands in international markets. The latter benefit from earlier overseas experience, deep technical know-how, and well-established global systems in the hybrid segment. For Chinese automakers to achieve breakthrough success internationally, they must rely on solid technical capabilities and compelling product competitiveness.
