In recent years, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market has seen the flagship "Series 9" large SUV segment emerge as one of the most fiercely competitive niches. Vehicles in this category typically exceed 5.2 meters in length, with some newer models approaching or even surpassing 5.4 meters—significantly outpacing traditional luxury rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLS (5,210 mm) and BMW X7 (5,170 mm). For example, the Li Auto L9 measures 5,218 mm, while the Aito M9 is 5,230 mm long. The latest iterations have grown even longer: the updated Li Auto L9 now stretches to 5,255 mm, the NIO ES9 reaches 5,365 mm, and the new Aito M9 offers both a standard version at 5,285 mm and an extended “Lingshi” variant at 5,402 mm. In terms of specifications, brands across the board are adopting high-end technical solutions. The Zeekr 9X features a 900V hybrid high-voltage architecture paired with a 2.0T engine across all trims, with higher-end variants offering a tri-motor system and a 48V active stabilizer bar. The NIO ES9 comes standard with steer-by-wire technology, while its premium trims add NIO’s Tianxing fully active suspension and dual NX9031 autonomous driving chips. The Li Auto L9 Livis edition exclusively features an 800V active suspension, full-by-wire chassis, and dual Mach intelligent driver-assistance systems. Meanwhile, the new Aito M9 will debut with six LiDAR units, and its extended version integrates a 2.0T range extender, tri-motor setup, and steer-by-wire technology. Although most Series 9 SUVs start above RMB 450,000, some brands have adopted aggressive “price penetration” strategies. The Leapmotor D19 starts at just RMB 219,800, measures 5,252 mm in length, and tops out with a tri-motor configuration. The XPeng GX is officially priced between RMB 269,800 and RMB 349,800, positioning it above conventional Series 9 models. BYD’s Tang EV preview pricing ranges from RMB 250,000 to RMB 320,000, with lengths of either 5,263 mm or 5,302 mm, equipped with second-generation Blade Battery technology, a claimed 950 km CLTC range, ultra-fast charging, and the Yun辇-A intelligent suspension system. Market performance has been impressive: the previous-generation Li Auto L9 became the first Chinese-brand SUV priced above RMB 400,000 to exceed 10,000 monthly sales. The outgoing Aito M9 consistently topped sales charts in the RMB 500,000-plus SUV segment, peaking at over 17,000 units in a single month; pre-orders for its new model have already surpassed 50,000 units. The Zeekr 9X has held the No. 1 spot in the large SUV segment above RMB 500,000 for multiple consecutive months. Although not part of the latest “Series 9” lineup, the NIO ES8 has already achieved “dual upgrades” in both size and sales volume relative to its original positioning. Additionally, Xiaomi plans to launch its first range-extended SUV later this year, potentially named the “Xuntian N90.” Expected to exceed 5.2 meters in length, it will reportedly feature a battery capacity of over 70 kWh, 400 km of CLTC pure-electric range, a next-generation smart cockpit, teardrop-shaped side mirrors, a “Sky-and-Earth” split tailgate, and native Xiao Blue Light functionality—potentially further disrupting the competitive landscape. Currently, the Series 9 SUV market is dominated by Li Auto, Aito, Zeekr, and NIO, while attracting entrants like BYD, XPeng, and Leapmotor through differentiated pricing strategies. The segment also faces potential disruption from upcoming newcomers such as Xiaomi.
