Tesla has published a patent titled "Airflow Optimization System for Enhancing Cabin Comfort," assigned the number US20260091643A1. The invention aims to address uneven cabin temperatures in vehicles equipped with large glass roofs under high-temperature conditions. Sunlight entering through the windshield and panoramic roof creates localized hot air pockets near the dashboard and headliner, resulting in significant temperature differences within the passenger compartment. Conventional HVAC systems struggle to effectively balance these temperatures, and their cooling processes consume substantial energy, negatively impacting electric vehicle range. The patent proposes an extraction-based HVAC system featuring dedicated intake vents strategically positioned along the upper edge of the dashboard and key areas of the headliner to directly draw out hot air and channel it into the HVAC plenum for cooling. During blower operation, the system simultaneously draws in both general cabin air and localized hot air, which is then filtered and cooled via evaporator coils before being reintroduced into the cabin. Compared to traditional approaches, this design minimizes mixing of hot and cold air, reduces peak temperatures, and improves thermal uniformity. Test data shows that after implementing this system, the temperature difference across occupants’ faces decreased from 21°C to 12°C, while blower speed and compressor power consumption were significantly reduced. The system includes an intelligent control module that dynamically activates or deactivates the extraction function based on solar intensity and real-time cabin temperature distribution, preventing the HVAC system from operating continuously at high load and thereby improving energy efficiency. Additionally, the extraction ducts serve a dual purpose: in summer, they extract hot air for cooling, while in winter, they reverse airflow to deliver warm air for rapid defrosting of the windshield. This solution can be implemented with minor modifications to existing hardware and may be retrofitted to current vehicle models.
