On June 3, Nissan announced it has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Chery, planning to produce vehicles under Chery’s brands starting from fiscal year 2027 on Line 1 of its Sunderland plant in the UK. This production line was previously shut down as part of Nissan’s global cost-reduction measures and had been used to manufacture the Leaf, Qashqai, and Juke SUVs. Production of these models has since been shifted to Line 2, freeing up Line 1 for third-party use. Chery has not yet disclosed which specific models will be produced in the UK, but its brands currently sold in the British market include Jaecoo, Omoda, Lepas, and Chery’s own SUV brand. Over the past two years, Chery’s various brands have collectively captured nearly 7% of the UK market share. Additionally, Chery recently confirmed plans to partner with the local brand Ebro to produce vehicles at a former Nissan factory near Barcelona, Spain. Ebro currently sells Chery-manufactured vehicles under its own brand name.
