Tesla has recently activated a local AI training center in China to support the localized development of its driver-assistance systems. Tao Lin, Vice President of Tesla, revealed that the center is already operational, processing China-specific road condition data and optimizing algorithms to establish a closed-loop system covering "data storage – local training – algorithm iteration." This move not only complies with China’s regulatory requirements mandating that geographic information data be stored domestically but also paves the way for future Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Robotaxi services in the country. Tao emphasized that Tesla’s driver-assistance data does not leave China and strictly adheres to domestic regulations. Although there is no clear timeline yet for FSD’s launch in China, the completion of the training center marks a critical step in addressing Tesla’s key gap in local adaptation. Additionally, Tesla maintains a cautious stance toward the industry-wide "parameter race," prioritizing overall reliability and user experience in charging infrastructure instead. This strategic shift is expected to reshape the competitive landscape of China’s intelligent driving sector and drive the industry toward an integrated hardware-software development model.
