Between 2019 and 2025, China's automotive market underwent a dramatic structural shift. Sales of gasoline-powered vehicles plummeted from 20.102 million units in 2019 to 10.049 million units in 2025—a nearly 50% decline over six years—causing their market share to drop sharply from 93.7% to 42.9%. Meanwhile, new energy vehicles (NEVs) experienced explosive growth, with total sales surging from under one million units to over 12 million units. In 2025, NEVs captured more than 50% of the market for the first time, becoming the dominant force. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drove most of this growth, with sales soaring from 717,000 units to 7.777 million units. The share of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles remained stable, accounting for 4.0% of the market in 2025. This transformation underscores the accelerating shift toward new energy vehicles in China’s auto market.
