FAW Group’s subsidiary, China Automotive New Energy Battery Technology Co., Ltd., has recently become the first in the industry to successfully install an ultra-high specific energy lithium-rich manganese-based semi-solid-state battery in a vehicle. Developed jointly by China Automotive New Energy and the research team of Academician Jun Chen from Nankai University, the battery cell achieves an energy density of approximately 500 Wh/kg—more than double that of mainstream lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The full battery pack delivers 142 kWh of capacity, enabling a driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. The battery employs a proprietary super-wetting in-situ cured composite electrolyte technology, combining the safety advantages of solid-state batteries with the high ionic conductivity of liquid electrolytes. It also features a five-dimensional safety protection system—covering thermal, electrical, mechanical, gas, and fire aspects—to achieve zero thermal runaway propagation. As a transitional solution toward fully solid-state batteries, this semi-solid-state technology is scheduled to begin pilot operations in 2026, targeting a battery pack capacity exceeding 200 kWh and a range of up to 1,600 kilometers.
