Recently, sodium-ion batteries have been gaining significant momentum, with the industry dubbing this year the "inaugural year of sodium batteries." Leveraging advantages such as abundant raw materials, low cost, high safety, and excellent low-temperature performance, sodium-ion batteries are expanding beyond energy storage and start-stop power applications into the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. Their raw material costs are 30–40% lower than those of lithium-ion batteries and contain no scarce metals like cobalt or nickel. At –40°C, they retain over 90% of their capacity, and at –20°C, their performance significantly outperforms that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Additionally, sodium-ion batteries support ultra-fast charging—reaching 80% state of charge in just 15 minutes—and can be safely transported at 0V, demonstrating outstanding safety and cycle life. Although their energy density is slightly lower than that of lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion technology holds clear advantages in entry-level passenger vehicles and short-range commercial vehicles. Industry experts believe that sodium and lithium battery technologies will coexist complementarily in the future, driving greater diversification in the NEV market and enhancing supply chain security.
