Despite two consecutive years of declining sales, the Tesla Model Y remained California's best-selling vehicle in 2024. According to data from the California New Car Dealers Association, 110,120 Model Y units were newly registered in the state last year, down from 128,923 in 2023 and 132,636 in 2022. Nevertheless, it still significantly outpaced the second-place Toyota RAV4, which recorded 65,604 registrations—a lead of 44,516 vehicles. Tesla’s other key model, the Model 3, ranked fourth with 53,989 registrations, trailing behind the Toyota Camry (62,324 units). Overall, Tesla’s total electric vehicle registrations in California also declined for the second straight year, totaling 179,656 in 2024, compared to 202,865 in 2023 and 238,589 in 2022. As the core U.S. market for electric vehicles, California has long supported Tesla’s sales performance, thanks to its high-income population and favorable climate.
