Mazda has officially discontinued the physical center-console rotary knob it has used for over a decade, replacing it with a large touchscreen display powered by the new-generation Mazda Connect system based on Google Built-In. The updated system will debut in the 2026 CX-5. Despite the shift in interface, Mazda emphasized that its core philosophy of “minimizing driver distraction” remains unchanged. The new system supports steering wheel shortcut buttons, voice control, and synchronized information display on the instrument cluster, ensuring drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. According to the company, as in-car app ecosystems expand and user habits evolve, the single rotary knob can no longer meet operational demands. Drawing inspiration from smartphone logic, the new system aims to deliver an intuitive “use immediately upon entry, learn as you go” experience. For the foreseeable future, both the old and new systems will coexist, with the pace of adoption determined by user feedback.
