Horse Powertrains has unveiled its new H12 Concept hybrid engine prototype, claiming a combined fuel consumption of 71 miles per gallon (approximately 3.3 liters per 100 kilometers) under WLTP testing standards—a significant improvement over conventional passenger cars in Europe. The engine is an evolution of the HR12, featuring a high 17:1 compression ratio, compatibility with 100% renewable fuels, and a peak brake thermal efficiency of 44.2%. Key technological highlights include a next-generation exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, an optimized turbocharger, and a high-energy ignition system, all paired with an improved hybrid transmission to further reduce internal friction and enhance energy management. Horse has already completed validation of two prototype units in collaboration with partner Repsol, with the first production vehicle expected to launch early this year. Company executives stated that this technology demonstrates how combining highly efficient internal combustion engines with renewable fuels can deliver immediate carbon reductions without waiting for future solutions.
