Recently, a GMC Sierra electric vehicle ran out of battery and became stranded in a gas station parking lot. The driver quickly improvised by using a portable generator to provide an emergency charge. Footage released by roadside assistance company Sparkcheck91️⃣1️⃣1 shows the vehicle’s dashboard green light flashing, confirming it was receiving power. The company frequently offers mobile charging services for stranded EVs and previously used a generator to charge a Kia Niro with only 1% battery remaining—a process expected to take nearly nine hours for a full charge. Experts caution that generators plugged into standard 120V outlets offer extremely low charging efficiency. However, high-output portable generators equipped with a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet—such as models from Wen or Apex—can deliver Level 2 charging, capable of fully charging a standard-range Tesla Model 3 in about five hours. While significantly slower than Supercharger speeds, this method remains a viable solution in emergencies.
