To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Golf GTI, Volkswagen recently unveiled again the Design Vision GTI concept car originally introduced in 2013. Based on the discontinued three-door seventh-generation GTI, the concept features a shorter and lower body, widened by 71 millimeters, and is equipped with 20-inch center-lock wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes. The interior is dramatically stripped down: rear seats are removed, replaced by racing bucket seats, an X-brace roll bar, and extensive use of Alcantara and carbon fiber. Even the dashboard design echoes that of the Audi R8. Under the hood, it’s powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine shared with the Golf R, producing 503 horsepower, paired with all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch transmission—enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds. Although fully drivable, the car was created solely for show and was never intended for production. Looking back today, this radical concept highlights how much the current GTI lineup has become more restrained—the three-door variant and manual transmission have both disappeared. Nevertheless, Volkswagen reaffirms its commitment to keeping the gasoline-powered GTI alive even as the automotive industry shifts toward electrification.
