On February 23, Hong Kong’s Transport Department announced that Apollo Go—Baidu’s autonomous mobility service—has become the first company approved to conduct cross-district autonomous driving tests in North Lantau. The newly authorized test route now fully connects Airport Island, Tung Chung Town Centre, and Sunny Bay, spanning a total length of 43.2 kilometers. This marks the fifth expansion of Apollo Go’s testing area since it received Hong Kong’s first pilot license for autonomous driving in November 2024, signifying the extension of its testing network from the airport hub into key residential communities. The latest upgrade also includes increasing the number of vehicles operating simultaneously and implementing coordinated operations between onboard safety operators and the remote control center on Airport Island, accumulating critical data toward achieving fully driverless operations. To address Hong Kong’s unique driving conditions—such as right-hand drive and complex roundabouts—Apollo Go has enhanced its system adaptability and safety through algorithmic optimization. Baidu stated it will continue advancing smart mobility services to support Hong Kong’s development of intelligent transportation systems.
