Despite slim prospects for the all-new rotary-powered "RX" sports car, Mazda remains firmly committed to the Miata (MX-5). The current fourth-generation ND model has been in production for 12 years, but the fifth-generation NE won’t arrive anytime soon—Jo Stenuit, Head of Design for Europe, revealed it’s still “a few years away.” The powertrain hasn’t been finalized yet. While some form of electrification may be incorporated, mild-hybrid technology is considered the lowest priority due to its limited effectiveness. A more desirable solution would be a pure internal combustion engine running on synthetic fuel, which could avoid the weight penalty of electrification while meeting emissions regulations—but infrastructure for such fuels is virtually nonexistent at present. Due to EU regulations, the 2.0L engine was withdrawn from the European market two years ago, leaving only the 1.5L variant available. Engineers are currently optimizing both naturally aspirated engines—focusing on combustion efficiency, exhaust after-treatment, and overall performance—in hopes of reintroducing the 2.0L to Europe. If synthetic fuels prove unfeasible, Mazda would prefer the lightest possible electrification approach. However, the larger-displacement Skyactiv-Z engine has already been ruled out, as it would compromise both vehicle balance and emissions compliance. Mazda reaffirms its commitment that the NE generation will continue to uphold the core principles of rear-wheel drive, manual transmission, and lightweight design.
