A Florida woman, Madeleine Grace, recently exposed on TikTok that she encountered aggressive upselling while trying to redeem her car’s first-year “free oil change” service at a Delray Toyota dealership. Staff told her there was a nail in her tire and insisted she needed new tires, and also recommended paying for new windshield wipers and an air conditioning filter. After Grace refused and drove her car to a nearby tire shop herself, the technicians there found her tires were perfectly fine, fixed the issue for free, and even showed her how to buy and replace filters affordably. Many commenters shared similar experiences, criticizing dealerships for using free maintenance offers as bait to push unnecessary services. Others noted that some local repair shops offer more reliable and cost-effective service. Media outlets have reached out to both Grace and the dealership involved, but neither has responded yet.
