In August 2019, a Tesla Model X owner paid RMB 56,000 for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature shortly after taking delivery of the vehicle, but nearly seven years later, the feature still hasn’t been activated. The owner stated that sales representatives explicitly promised the core “Full Self-Driving” capabilities at the time of purchase, yet Tesla has never delivered on this commitment. The owner has now invoked China’s Civil Code to demand contract termination and a full refund, but Tesla has not provided a substantive response. Automotive blogger “Bai Tuo Le Lao Si Ji” (Please Help Me, Veteran Driver) noted that conventional complaints are unlikely to be effective, and legal action may be the only viable path to seek redress. However, even if the plaintiff wins in court, enforcement remains challenging—there have already been similar cases where courts ordered Tesla to provide data, but the company refused to comply and continued appealing. The prospect of the owner recovering the payment remains uncertain.
