Recently, a viral TikTok video has sparked online debate about basic math literacy. In the clip, a customer visits an AutoZone store to buy a 1/4-inch fuel line, but the clerk responds with confusion: "So, 1/4 is just 1 and 4, right?" The two brothers were stunned on the spot and later recorded and uploaded the exchange. The video has since garnered over 92,000 views and ignited heated discussions in the comments section. Some users pointed out that this reflects a lack of understanding of fractions among certain adults—according to the 2023 Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), 34% of respondents struggled with even simple fractions or percentages. Others defended the employee, arguing that retail positions are often entry-level roles and shouldn't be expected to require specialized knowledge. However, many emphasized that understanding 1/4 is elementary school math and has nothing to do with automotive expertise. The individuals involved have not yet responded to media requests for comment.
