Mechanics at Wisconsin-based Aeschbach Auto are urging drivers not to ignore the low-fuel warning light—or let their fuel tanks drop below a quarter full. In a viral TikTok video, technician Sandro explains that the fuel pump, which is located inside the gas tank, relies on gasoline to stay cool. Running low on fuel causes the pump to overheat and fail prematurely. Fellow technician Justin adds that consistently driving on “E” damages the pump and leads to costly repairs, a point echoed by Antonio. Experts also warn that sediment settled at the bottom of the tank can be drawn into the fuel system when fuel levels are low, potentially clogging filters or damaging the engine. Sources such as Consumer Reports and Erie Insurance reinforce this advice: keep your tank at least one-quarter full to prevent damage and save money in the long run. While most cars still have 30–60 miles of range after the low-fuel light comes on, making it a habit risks serious mechanical problems.
