In a research report released on March 2, Huaxi Securities noted that sodium-ion batteries are shifting from cost-driven to application-driven adoption and are poised to become a significant complement to lithium-ion batteries. Global shipments are expected to reach 9 GWh in 2025, a 150% year-over-year increase, and could surpass 1,000 GWh by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate exceeding 100%. Sodium-ion batteries demonstrate excellent safety performance—passing tests without catching fire or exploding—and maintain high capacity even in low-temperature environments, effectively addressing winter operational challenges for commercial vehicles in northern regions. Although their energy density and cycle life are slightly inferior to those of lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries offer substantial advantages due to abundant raw materials, low extraction costs, and current price parity with lithium-ion batteries, giving them significant potential in energy storage, light electric vehicles, and start-stop power applications.
