A new study released by Cox Automotive reveals that 69% of Gen Z consumers are willing to consider purchasing Chinese-branded vehicles—a figure significantly higher than the overall average among respondents. Although high tariffs currently restrict Chinese automakers from entering the U.S. market, 40% of respondents still support their entry into the United States. Notably, 76% of consumers said they would be more inclined to consider Chinese brands if they partnered with established American automakers. However, the study also highlights that awareness of Chinese automotive brands remains generally low: BYD, the most recognized Chinese brand, was only known to 35% of respondents, and just 17% claimed to have a genuine understanding of the brand. As countries like Canada gradually reduce tariffs, Chinese automakers are accelerating their expansion into overseas markets, with price-sensitive and open-minded Gen Z consumers potentially serving as a key force in unlocking the U.S. market.
