Polestar Australia head Scott Maynard recently criticized plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) as "choosing the worse of two evils," arguing that they carry the mechanical complexity of internal combustion engines while adding the burden of an electric drivetrain—contradicting Polestar’s brand positioning focused on pure-electric performance and decarbonization. Renault CEO Luca de Meo went further, calling certain PHEVs with excessively short all-electric ranges "fake electrification," as their limited range makes it difficult for users to develop charging habits, leaving them reliant on gasoline in practice. He expressed a preference for range-extended electric vehicles as a transitional solution, enabling daily driving on electricity and long-distance travel using fuel, thereby combining electric driving experience with a 1,000-kilometer total range. Europe has already tightened PHEV regulations, mandating larger battery capacities to bring real-world electric range closer to official figures. However, larger batteries add extra weight, which in turn reduces efficiency in gasoline-powered mode.
