Ford CEO Jim Farley recently stated that software—not electric vehicles or competition from Chinese automakers—represents the auto industry's most formidable challenge. He noted that the impact of software on the industry could be ten times greater than that of electrification. Farley revealed that Ford had disassembled a Tesla Model Y and found its wiring harness to be 32 kilograms lighter and 1.6 kilometers shorter than that of the Mustang Mach-E, highlighting Tesla’s fundamentally new design philosophy centered on holistic vehicle architecture and software. In contrast, traditional automakers remain constrained by legacy supply-chain mindsets. He believes Chinese automakers, benefiting from faster development cycles and government support, have already taken the lead in software experience, cost control, and product maturity. Looking ahead, as autonomous driving becomes widespread, vehicles will evolve into a “third living space,” where in-cabin experience will matter more than driving itself—and software-defined vehicles will become the key competitive differentiator.
