Recently, several automotive executives have questioned the carbon-reduction effectiveness of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Scott Menard, head of Polestar Australia, criticized PHEVs for their redundant design, arguing they deviate from the goal of pure-electric decarbonization. Renault CEO Luca de Meo went further, calling some PHEVs "fake electrification," as users often fail to develop consistent charging habits and thus remain heavily reliant on gasoline in real-world use. A study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) found that real-world fuel consumption of PHEVs is 42% to 67% higher than official figures, with actual all-electric driving accounting for a much smaller share than expected. In response, European regulators have tightened oversight, mandating larger battery capacities to better reflect real-world electric range—though bigger batteries add vehicle weight, negatively impacting fuel efficiency. De Meo stated he favors range-extended electric vehicles over PHEVs as a transitional solution, as they better balance daily electric driving with long-distance gasoline-powered travel.
