On March 4, Jin Yuzhi, CEO of Huawei's Intelligent Automotive Solutions BU, addressed an accident that occurred during the Spring Festival on a foggy stretch of road in Anhui Province at the HarmonyOS Intelligent Mobility launch event. He explained that at the time of the incident, the vehicle was operating in Qiankun intelligent driving assistance mode, and the system had already reduced the speed to 60 km/h. However, due to impaired visibility, the driver manually accelerated the vehicle to over 100 km/h, ultimately causing a rear-end collision. Jin emphasized that the millimeter-wave radar had already reached its detection limits in the dense fog, and speeding significantly increased the risk. He also provided a detailed comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of cameras, millimeter-wave radar, and LiDAR: cameras are easily affected by rain, fog, and backlighting; millimeter-wave radar offers stability but cannot identify object height or shape; and LiDAR delivers high precision but has limited penetration capability. Only by fusing all three sensor types can vehicles achieve accurate, all-weather perception and enhance driving safety in adverse weather conditions.
