Volkswagen has unveiled a silhouette of the ninth-generation Golf (Golf 9) for the first time during an internal meeting in Wolfsburg. The new model’s exterior will carry forward the design language of the current and seventh-generation Golf, preserving the brand’s classic styling cues. Departing from its previous strategy—where models like the ID.3 were visually distinct from combustion-engine vehicles—Volkswagen plans to unify the design of the gasoline-powered Golf and its all-electric counterpart, the ID. Golf. Production of the gasoline-powered Golf 9 is expected to begin in Mexico in 2027, with the model likely remaining on sale for an extended period. It may even receive a significant mid-cycle refresh around the time the ID. Golf launches in 2028. A similar approach will be applied to the Polo lineup: the all-electric ID. Polo is set to debut at the end of 2026, featuring a design closely aligned with the current model. Additionally, Volkswagen announced a return to physical buttons and introduced an optional “Classic Golf Mk1 Retro Mode” for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen.
