Recently, Scott Maynard, head of Polestar Australia, and Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, publicly criticized plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Maynard described them as "choosing the worse of two evils," arguing they struggle to balance performance with a genuine all-electric driving experience. De Meo went further, calling short-range PHEVs "fake electrification," as users often fail to develop charging habits and remain reliant on gasoline. In contrast, de Meo believes range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) are better suited as a transitional solution—using electricity for daily commutes and gasoline for long-distance travel, aligning more closely with real-world usage patterns. Meanwhile, Europe is tightening regulations on PHEVs, mandating larger battery capacities. However, bigger batteries add vehicle weight, which in turn reduces fuel efficiency. Market data shows that although PHEVs will remain the second-largest technology pathway in 2025, over 60% of newly launched hybrid models in 2026 are already range-extended variants, rapidly becoming the dominant transitional choice.
