Ford CEO Jim Farley recently acknowledged publicly that the company severely misjudged market demand and industry trends regarding its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck, resulting in billions of dollars in direct losses. As a consequence, Ford has halted development of its next-generation electric pickup, several three-row electric SUVs, and an all-electric van. Farley noted that legacy thinking from the internal combustion engine era hindered the company’s electrification transition, keeping vehicle costs excessively high. Although models like the Mustang Mach-E have gained market acceptance, consumers remain unwilling to pay premium prices for high-cost electric vehicles. Compared with Tesla, Ford lags significantly in areas such as overall vehicle architecture and wiring harness weight, highlighting its failure to fully adapt to the engineering logic of electric vehicle development. A brief post-pandemic market boom further exacerbated these strategic misjudgments.
