Ford recently announced it is halting development of the next-generation all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck, along with several other electric SUVs and van models. CEO Jim Farley admitted the company significantly misjudged market demand for these vehicles and was hampered by entrenched internal thinking rooted in traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, which kept production costs for its EVs excessively high. Although the F-150 Lightning initially attracted considerable attention, interest quickly faded, resulting in billions of dollars in losses. A brief post-pandemic market boom and the global chip shortage had temporarily driven up vehicle prices and profits, but this proved unsustainable. Compared to Tesla, Ford’s EVs—such as the Mustang Mach-E—still rely on conventional design approaches in details like wiring harnesses, making them heavier and more expensive to produce, revealing a fundamental difference in engineering philosophy.
