As Level 3 and higher autonomous driving accelerates toward commercialization, traditional in-vehicle copper cables are approaching their physical limits in terms of bandwidth, weight, and electromagnetic interference resistance, making them inadequate for meeting the demands of intelligent connected vehicles for real-time transmission of massive data volumes. At this year’s Two Sessions, Liu Wu, a national deputy to the National People's Congress and an engineer at China Information Technology Corporation (CICT), proposed expediting the industrialization of in-vehicle optical communication—advocating “bringing fiber optics into vehicles” to address the industry’s “bandwidth anxiety.” He emphasized that optical fiber offers high bandwidth, low latency, lightweight properties, and inherent immunity to electromagnetic interference, making it a critical enabler for upgrading next-generation automotive electronic and electrical architectures and fostering deeper integration between optoelectronics and the automotive industry.
