Denso, a core supplier to Toyota, is moving forward with a full acquisition of Japanese semiconductor company Rohm to address its weakness in logic chips and expand its customer base beyond the automotive sector. Denso currently holds strong capabilities in power and analog semiconductors but lacks the logic chip expertise essential for serving as the "brain" of electronic systems, and its business remains heavily dependent on the automotive industry. Rohm, the world’s 12th-largest power semiconductor manufacturer, serves clients in sectors such as PCs and servers, effectively helping Denso overcome its market limitations. The acquisition will enable Denso to gain end-to-end control—from chip design to integration—ensuring a stable supply chain for Toyota’s electric vehicles and future technologies. Against the backdrop of global automakers accelerating their strategic moves into semiconductors, this deal aligns with broader industry trends and has the potential to reshape Japan’s automotive semiconductor landscape.
