On March 12, Tesla China released data showing that its sales in China reached 58,600 units (combined Model 3 and Model Y) in February, up 91% year-over-year but down 15.2% month-over-month. Export performance was particularly strong, hitting 20,000 units—a roughly fivefold increase year-over-year—making it a key driver of overall growth. This significant growth was partly due to a low base effect from the same period last year, when Tesla temporarily halted some production in February 2024 to adjust its production lines for the refreshed Model Y. Meanwhile, BYD reported its steepest global sales decline since the pandemic last month, with domestic sales in China plunging 65% year-over-year. Last week, BYD announced its first major battery upgrade initiative in six years to boost market confidence.
