Nissan Motor, Uber, and UK-based autonomous driving company Wayve have announced a collaboration to launch a pilot program for autonomous ride-hailing services in Tokyo, Japan, by the end of 2026. The initiative will be based on Nissan’s all-electric Leaf vehicles, equipped with Wayve’s end-to-end AI autonomous driving technology, and offered through the Uber platform. Initially, safety drivers will be present inside the vehicles. This marks Uber’s first autonomous driving partnership in Japan. Wayve’s technology uses onboard cameras to perceive the environment in real time and has already undergone testing in multiple locations across Japan. The three companies aim to expand the service to more than 10 cities worldwide, including a planned launch in London later this year. Nissan hopes this collaboration will accelerate its progress toward Level 5 full autonomy and help revitalize its underperforming market position.
