At approximately 9:00 p.m. on April 19, Zhou activated his vehicle's driver-assistance system and resumed driving after charging at Jinshiqiao Service Area on the Hubei–Beihai Expressway. Due to a malfunction in the driver-assistance system, his car entered the main highway lane in the wrong direction, nearly colliding with oncoming traffic. Zhou remained unaware of the anomaly throughout the incident and only made an emergency maneuver to avoid a collision and turned around when oncoming vehicles approached closely. According to the investigation, Zhou stated he trusted the system would automatically correct the vehicle’s direction and failed to notice the directional arrows on the road surface. His actions constituted illegal driving against traffic on an expressway. Although no accident occurred, he was legally fined 200 yuan, received a 12-point penalty on his driver’s license, and underwent reprimand and safety education.
