Audi is recalling 18,853 all-electric E-Tron SUVs in the United States, including 14,102 units of the 2019–2024 E-Tron and 4,751 units of the 2020–2025 E-Tron Sportback. The recall stems from a manufacturing defect at German supplier Aumovio’s facility, where the connecting screw between the brake pedal input rod and the brake booster actuator rod was not tightened to the correct torque specification. This could cause the brake pedal to detach from the booster, resulting in a complete loss of service braking. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not instructed owners to stop driving their vehicles but advises that if the brake pedal fails to respond, drivers should use the emergency brake to stop safely. Some owners may notice warning signs beforehand, such as unusual noises or a brake pedal that does not return to its normal position. Audi will inspect the brake booster free of charge through authorized dealers and properly retorque the affected screw without requiring any parts replacement. The E-Tron model line has since been renamed the Q8 E-Tron and discontinued. To date, this vehicle has been subject to at least 14 separate recalls in the U.S., with regulators documenting hundreds of customer complaints and thousands of service bulletins.
