A research team at the University of California, San Diego has developed a novel sodium-based battery technology using the Expanse supercomputer. This innovation aims to reduce costs and enhance sustainability for large-scale energy storage systems. Current power grids and electric vehicles primarily rely on lithium-ion batteries, but lithium is expensive and unevenly distributed globally. In contrast, sodium is abundant and low-cost, making it well-suited for backup energy storage systems paired with renewable sources like solar and wind power. The research focuses on addressing the challenge of achieving high cycling stability in sodium batteries while maintaining sufficient power output. The findings have been published in the journal *Advanced Energy Materials*.
