Citroën plans to launch an A00-segment all-electric microcar priced below £15,000 (approximately RMB 139,000), aiming to revitalize Europe’s sluggish new-car market. The model is expected to debut as a concept vehicle at the Paris Motor Show in October. Citroën CEO Xavier Chardon stated that the average price of new cars in Europe continues to rise, leaving many consumers unable to afford a vehicle. Europe remains the only major automotive market that has yet to recover since the pandemic, with roughly 3 million potential buyers annually still not purchasing a car—60% of whom cite the lack of new vehicles priced under €15,000 (or £15,000) as the primary reason. Chardon noted that the average age of vehicles in Europe has now exceeded 12 years, having increased by more than two years over the past five years alone. He stressed the urgent need for affordable new cars to stimulate replacement demand. Drawing parallels to the post-World War II era—when “people’s cars” like the 2CV, Fiat 500, Volkswagen Beetle, and Austin Mini drove mass motorization—Chardon said Citroën aims for its new EV to carry forward the 2CV’s original mission of making cars accessible to the masses. However, he clarified that the new model will not be positioned as a direct spiritual successor to the 2CV nor emphasize retro styling. The target audience isn’t traditional rural users but rather young urban professionals—such as nurses—who rely on daily commuting. Chardon emphasized that nostalgia-driven design alone doesn’t guarantee success: while models like the Mini, Fiat 500, and the upcoming Renault 5 demonstrate that retro elements hold some market appeal, numerous revival attempts have failed. Therefore, Citroën is prioritizing practicality and price competitiveness to boost its market share in Europe and accelerate the growth of its electric vehicle sales.
