Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg produced its one-millionth electric drive unit on April 28 local time. The factory, which officially began operations on March 22, 2022, primarily manufactures the Model Y. By March 31, 2023, it had cumulatively produced 500,000 vehicles. The electric drive unit—comprising a motor, gearbox, and inverter—is a core component of electric vehicles. Since production began, the mass production of drive units has ensured stable vehicle output and supported continuous capacity expansion. In the first quarter of 2024, the factory produced over 61,000 electric vehicles, averaging approximately 4,700 units per week. The plant currently plans to increase weekly output to 6,000 vehicles and will hire 1,000 new employees starting in May, while also converting 500 temporary workers to permanent staff.
