Honda Motor is negotiating with the Canadian government over its electric vehicle (EV) and battery plant project in Ontario, considering indefinitely pausing or even completely abandoning the plan. The project, announced in April 2024, was originally slated to have an annual production capacity of 240,000 vehicles and a total investment of CAD 15 billion. Previously, in May 2023, Honda had already announced a two-year delay in the plant's construction. This reassessment comes amid shifting market conditions for EVs in North America. The United States has repealed its EV purchase tax credit policy and relaxed fuel economy requirements for automakers, weakening the competitiveness of battery-electric vehicles and boosting sales of hybrid models. Meanwhile, Honda also plans to discontinue production of the Prologue, a battery-electric vehicle co-developed with General Motors.
