For the 2026 model year, Ford is changing the front trunk (frunk) on the Mustang Mach-E in the U.S. market from standard equipment to a $495 (approximately ¥3,410 RMB) paid option. Although the vehicle’s front compartment already includes the necessary space and hardware for frunk access, non-paying customers will be unable to use the feature—on some trims, the frunk opening is even sealed with a cover plate. Previous models, including the 2025 and earlier versions, offered the frunk free of charge. Ford explained that data shows most owners rarely use the frunk, and since the 2025 model year, its capacity has been reduced by approximately 40% due to the addition of a heat pump system. Additionally, converting low-utilization features into optional extras helps lower the base price of the vehicle and enhances its market competitiveness. Notably, certain international markets—including France—will continue to offer the frunk as standard on the 2026 Mustang Mach-E, unaffected by the U.S. market strategy shift. In China, there are currently no plans to make the frunk a paid option.
