The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 has set a new lap record of 7 minutes and 44.52 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, driven by development driver Benjamin Leuchter. This time beats the previous record of 7:44.88 set by the Honda Civic Type R in 2023, making the GTI Edition 50 the current fastest front-wheel-drive production car around the Nürburgring. Prior to the Civic Type R, the record was held by the Renault Mégane RS Trophy-R with a time of 7:45.30. Currently, both the Golf GTI Edition 50 and the Civic Type R remain in production, while the Mégane RS has been discontinued for several years. Orders for the Golf GTI Edition 50 are no longer being accepted. In Germany, the model started at €54,540 (approximately RMB 437,000), higher than the base GTI’s €46,250 (around RMB 371,000) and the more track-focused GTI Clubsport at €49,820 (about RMB 399,000). The most expensive model in the Golf lineup is the Golf R, priced at €55,540 (roughly RMB 445,000), with its estate (Variant) version costing €56,810 (approximately RMB 455,000). Like all GTI and R models, the Edition 50 is offered exclusively with an automatic transmission, and the likelihood of reintroducing a manual gearbox in the future is extremely low—even though some lower-spec Golfs in Europe still offer a manual option. Volkswagen has confirmed that the internal combustion engine-powered Golf GTI will remain in production into the 2030s and plans to unveil its first all-electric GTI model, the ID. Polo GTI, later this year.
